Have you seen the movie “Message in a Bottle” with Kevin Costner. His wife had passed away and as part of his grieving process he had written her several letters. After he wrote each one he then took it, put it in a bottle and threw it out into the ocean. A few years later someone finds the letters and the drama unfolds.
Maybe you’ve heard of people doing something like that before or maybe you’ve done it yourself. It is quite common at funerals to hear people read a letter they wrote to a loved one who just passed away.
We’re not writing those letters to the people themselves, it’s just something we need to do. A way of communicating and expressing what we’re feeling inside.
You could say the posts and comments on this blog are like letters or “messages in a bottle” that someone else is going to happen upon. On this blog I’m calling them “Letters to the Old Man”. No , not letters to my father. Letters to the person I used to be. The negative things I did in the past that try to control who I am today. The sin, failures and wrong choices of my past that try to keep me from moving forward to what lies ahead.
These “letters” are intended to be written on the tablet of our hearts. As we fill our heart with these “letters” we are declaring to the old man he’s dead and gone and not welcome here anymore (Romans 6:6).
Through Christ I am a new creation. My identity is no longer in my past sin or failures. My identity is now in Christ. The more I reaffirm who I am in Christ the more my behaviour will begin to reflect my true identity.
